India Post  releases commemorative postage stamps on ‘Indian Musicians”

Bhubaneswar 3rdSeptember  :  India Post today released a set of eight Commemorative Postage Stamps  on “Indian Musicians”. This set of 8 Commemorative Postage Stamps recognizes  the contributions of eight doyens of Indian Classical Music. A Miniature sheet and 8 sheetlets  were also  released with this issue.(Total cost of stamps  Rs 80 Rs,Sheetlet Rs 720 ). The stamps were released on Sitar Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, renowned Vocalist of Hindustan Music Bhimsen Joshi, Legndary singer of Carnatic music D K Pattammal, Carnatic Singer Gangubai Hangal, Noted Hindustani classical Singer Kumar Gndharva, Sitar Maestro Vilayat Khan, Hindustan Classical Singer of the Khayal style Mallikarjun Mansur and Hindustani classical musician of Maihar Gharana Ali Akbar Khan.
Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythms, melody, harmony and color. Two main traditions of Indian Music are Carnatic Music and Hindustani Music. Hindustani Classical Music is found throughout North India and is sometimes called North Indian Classical Music or Shastriya Sangeet. It is a mixture of traditional Hindu musical concepts and Persian performance practice. Carnatic Classical Music is found in southern part of the Indian sub-continent in the four modern states of India i.e. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Karnataka Sangeetham.
India Post has tried to capture the essence of the Indian Classical Music from time to time through these postage stamps. In Odisha, Sri Tilak De,Chief Postmaster General, Odisha Circle today released the above mentioned commemorative postage stamps at Bhubaneswar GPO in the presence of Sri Subash Chandra Barik,Senior Supdt. of Post Offices,Bhubaneswar Division and Sri Girish Chandra Sahoo,Senior Postmaster,Bhubaneswar GPO. Addressing the  media during the release ceremony, Mr. Tilak De  said it was for the first time that the India Posts was releasing eight postage stamps on musicians at a time. The ceremony was attended by the eminent philatelists namely Sri Anil Dhir,Sri Santi Swarup Rath,Sri Kashinath Sahoo,Sri Nursing Dash and  general public.
The Stamps and Sheetlets alongwith the Information Brochures and First Day Covers   are now available for sale at all Philatelic Bureau and selected Post offices from today. The First Day Cancellations are also provided at all Philatelic Bureau.
